At The Hickory Pit, smoker welcomedThe smoker at The Hickory Pit is attached to the outside of the building, but Bobby Chandler can access the smoking meats from inside the restaurant by lifting the iron door. The Hickory Pit, 501 S. McMasters St., serves lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays to customers wanting a home-cooked lunch. In June, owners Bobby and Kathy Chandler will mark their two-year anniversary of serving smoked meats and ribs. "I've always liked to cook," said Bobby Chandler, a former insurance adjuster. The Chandlers' specialty is smoked brisket prepared in the cooker attached to the building, as well as the Fridays-only specialty - ribs. "The chopped beef sandwich (prepared from the brisket) and combo plates are our best-selling items," Kathy Chandler said. Lunch plates, beginning at $5.90, come with a choice of two sides. The Chandlers also cater and provide custom cooking. Ham, sausage and beef, sold by the pound, are available for take-out. The restaurant seats 25 and is decorated in a Western theme, with metalwork crafted by John Foster of Oliver's Saddle Shop. "John's a friend and made many of the items " Bobby Chandler said. Chandler said he enjoys his new profession and preparing food for hungry customers. "I enjoy the customers and visiting with people," he said.
